Importance of Self-Control

Extracted from a longer post on my friend sunnystarfish‘s blog:

“If children and youth were trained and educated to habits of self-denial and self-control, if they were taught that they eat to live instead of living to eat, there would be less disease and less moral corruption. There would be little necessity for temperance crusades,… if in the youth, who form and fashion society, right principles in regard to temperance could be implanted. They would then have moral worth and moral integrity to resist, in the strength of Jesus, the pollutions of these last days.”

Your Baby Can Read

I don’t have any children to try it on, but I thought this was really amazing. In the video, a 13-month-old girl “reads” cards her daddy shows her. (It appears she doesn’t exactly “read” them, in the phonetic sense, but she does recognize the meaning of the words.) In the commentary, a related technique of teaching infants sign language for important words is also mentioned in passing. Parents and soon-to-be parents might like to check this out.
