I have a friend who is trying to install CRE and it isn’t going very well.

I moved the fonts back to the fonts folder and it seems to work fine.

As Darryl indicated, you can find both the “Fonts” and “Fonts Disabled” folders in the folder “Library” which is the Library on Hard drive icon on your desktop. _Not_ the Library in your Home folder; I mention this because it too has a fonts folder located in the same relative place.

Darryl, I believe that installer has all three fonts that EGW CRE requires. Arial, Courier New and Times New Roman in TTF types.

Microsoft in their wisdom when they released Office 2011 for Mac updated the legacy OS X fonts by installing newer versions with similar names. Go to the /Library/Fonts/Microsoft/ folder. Of course this creates conflicts with the existing similar fonts installed by OS X. If you already have the Office 2008 set of fonts on your hard drive, Office 2011 will replace them. There are also 27 more fonts in Office 2011 than in 2008. 62 Mac legacy TrueType fonts installed by Office 2011 are identical to those from Office 2008. Six typefaces which used to be legacy fonts are now .ttf fonts. Usually such changes are to fix minor flaws in the fonts, or to improve kerning and kerning pairs for a more pleasing look. The Office 2011 installation created a mixed bag of older and newer conflicting fonts.

During the initial install of Office 2011, newer .ttf font sets replace those installed by OS X, Leopard and Snow Leopard. The older fonts are deprecated to a new folder named /Library/Fonts Disabled/. They are:

Arial.ttf
Arial Italic.ttf
Arial Bold.ttf
Arial Bold Italic.ttf
Brush Script.ttf
Times New Roman.ttf
Times New Roman Italic.ttf
Times New Roman Bold.ttf
Times New Roman Bold Italic.ttf
Verdana.ttf
Verdana Italic.ttf
Verdana Bold.ttf
Verdana Bold Italic.ttf
Wingdings.ttf
Wingdings 2.ttf
Wingdings 3.ttf

Now out of this list two fonts are required by the EGW CRE CD. So to fix this Microsoft “update” the White Estate has created a simple installer to replace these two deleted TTF fonts: Arial.ttf and Times New Roman.ttf

Issue 5: The Ellen G. White Writings Comprehensive Research Edition (Mac) will require a font patch to be run after you have installed Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac OS X. Microsoft in their wisdom moves Ariel and Times New Roman True Type Fonts into a disabeled Fonts folder and replaces them for newer versions using a different name variation rendering our software inoperable. So install the EGW CRE Font Patch to fix this issue as these fonts are required by the EGW CRE OS X software to operate correctly. Otherwise all you’ll see inplace of characters are square boxes when you run our EGW CRE app!

If you are installing our EGW CRE software on OS X 10.4 (Tiger), please visit an end users Mac and White web site for support. They have worked with the White Estate and have agreed to create patches for Tiger users to install our EGW CRE app. The White Estate does not support Tiger OS 10.4, but you can with Mac and White Web site assistance get it to operate just fine.

I would like to clarify. I have been running EGW on my mac since beta1 or 2 and have had almost no problem. But I have iworks instead of Office until this experiment to confirm my suspicion that is was office causing the problem.

I installed “Microsoft Office:mac 2011″ on my Mac and guest what, now my font in EGW is little boxes to. I did a complete uninstall according to Microsoft directions and my font is still little boxes.

I have not been on here for about a year, but has this issue come up before?
Can anyone help?

I use new instance (THANK YOU Michael I still appreciate it sooooooo much! right now I have four copies open! ;0) and every once in a while when I have multiple windows open and close them out when I start it again it will get about 2/3′s done opening and then it will quit but the icon is open in my doc. So I close them all down and restart and wha-lah it works again. I just always leave a copy of EGW open until I am ready to restart to save any extra little time. I use it quite frequently so it is OK to have it running. I still have the beta version of the EGW 2008. And from what I hear new instance never made it on the final cut.
